Female Facial Hirsutism
Hirsutism in women refers to the excessive growth of coarse, dark hair in areas typically associated with male hair patterns, such as the upper lip, chin, cheeks, and jawline. It is caused by an increased sensitivity to androgens (male hormones) or higher levels of these hormones in the body.
The condition can be genetic, but it is often linked to underlying medical issues such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), adrenal disorders, or certain medications. In some cases, no clear cause is identified, a situation referred to as idiopathic hirsutism.
While not usually harmful physically, hirsutism can have a significant emotional and psychological impact, affecting self-esteem and social confidence.
Treatment focuses on managing the underlying cause, if identified, and may include lifestyle changes, hormonal therapies (such as the contraceptive pill or anti-androgens), or topical treatments. Cosmetic options like laser hair removal, electrolysis, or threading can also be effective for hair reduction.
